Based on Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) approved guidelines. Refer to NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide available at https://fcr-ccc.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/en for more information. Full battery charge and ideal conditions are required. Figures will vary based, amongst others and non-exclusively, on driving and charging habits, speed, accessory use, weather and temperature, battery age, vehicle condition, road condition and other factors. In sub ideal conditions, figures may worsen by more than 50%. Battery capacity decreases with time and use which will further reduce range. See the owner’s manual or NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide for details.

SUBARU PRESENTS CANADIAN DEBUT OF 2010 FORESTER PZEV
15 January, 2009

Forester Partial Zero Emission Vehicle Joins
North America's Most Fuel-Efficient All-Wheel Drive Lineup

MONTRÉAL, Québec - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) today unveiled the 2010 Forester Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (PZEV) at Le Salon International de l'auto de Montréal. The Forester PZEV is expected to appear in Canadian dealerships in the early summer, and joins the Canadian Legacy and Outback PZEV models that debuted in Montréal just one year ago.

The new Forester PZEV is great news for consumers. With its effective emission controls, it adds an important new element of environmental responsibility to North America's most fuel-efficient lineup of All-Wheel Drive vehicles. It also gives consumers yet another excellent reason to choose a Forester - the vehicle that was recently named both Canada's best new Sport/Crossover Utility Vehicle in the under-$35,000 category by the Automotive Journalists Association of Canada, and Sport/Utility of the Year by Motor Trend magazine.

"Forester has been in the forefront of crossover utility since its launch and every generation has introduced an innovative new way to think about compact SUVs," said Katsuhiro Yokoyama, president and CEO of SCI. "Subaru is extremely proud to offer a new Forester that is fuel efficient and reduces smog forming emissions to almost nothing while remaining a powerful and versatile Sport Utility and an extremely safe family vehicle. This impressive combination has made the new Forester a huge winner with consumers as well as critics - sales of Forester have more than doubled since the debut of the new generation."

PZEV is a designation awarded to vehicles that meet strict emissions standards set by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). Subaru PZEV vehicles in Canada comply with the CARB Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle tailpipe standard (SULEV) and eliminate fuel-system evaporative emissions. Compared to an average new vehicle, Subaru PZEV vehicles have 90 percent cleaner exhaust emissions. In certain cases, vehicles meeting PZEV emission standards are even cleaner than hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. In addition, Subaru PZEV vehicles achieve such a complete fuel burn that in very smoggy urban areas, the exhaust out of the tailpipe can actually be cleaner than the air outside.

Forester Shines in All-Around SUV Capability
The new Forester PZEV is based on the Forester 2.5X and combines a robust chassis with standard Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive. Vehicle Dynamics Control system and an advanced braking system add to Forester's all-around capability.

Forester PZEV is powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-litre SOHC 4-cylinder boxer engine that produces 170 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. Symmetrical full-time All-Wheel Drive, Vehicle Dynamics Control, and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and Brake Assist, provide exceptional levels of active safety.

Generous ground clearance of 220 mm (8.7 inches) provides a margin of safety on rough roads, unpaved trails, and in snow - without sacrificing comfortable step-in height. Standard towing capacity of 1,087 kg (2,400 lb.) with a 91 kg (240 lb.) tongue weight is higher than many competitors and is substantial enough to pull a trailer with two personal watercraft.

Vehicle Dynamics Control
Vehicle Dynamics Control is standard on all Forester models. Vehicle Dynamics Control is a highly sophisticated electronic stability control system that monitors input from the ABS brake system as well as taking input from steering wheel angle, and yaw and lateral g-force sensors. The system adjusts individual wheel braking as needed, helping to maintain vehicle control under a variety of driving conditions. A Vehicle Dynamics Control 'off' switch is useful for driving out of slushy roads, deep snow or very loose gravel. The 'off' position deactivates the system's torque-reduction control, while the ABS and traction control remain active.

In all 2009 Foresters, Vehicle Dynamics Control system also provides traction control and a 'virtual' limited slip rear differential (LSD) function. Using the virtual rear LSD in place of a viscous-type unit provides the traction benefits of an LSD but without the weight or the potentially negative impact on steering response, turning ability or stability.

Forester Exemplifies Subaru's Safety Leadership
In all Subaru models, the foundation for outstanding occupant protection is the Advanced Ring Shaped Reinforcement Frame unibody structure, with a front-end configuration that disperses collision energy in three directions. This design forms a series of rings around the passenger compartment, providing protection in a variety of collision types. High-tension steel side-impact door beams and impact-absorbing foam materials enhance side-impact safety performance.

Standard passive safety technology includes the Subaru advanced frontal air bag system (SRS), driver and front passenger seat-mounted side-impact air bags, and standard side curtain air bags. A new rollover sensor can deploy the curtain side air bags if it detects a potential vehicle rollover.

Active front head restraints help reduce potential whiplash injury in a rear collision. A safety pedal system and impact-absorbing driver's footrest help reduce lower leg injury in a frontal collision.
