Safety + security = confidence in motion

Subaru has forged a reputation for building vehicles that offer superior levels of protection through the use of the most technologically advanced active and passive safety systems available. The end result: vehicles that inspire confidence and peace of mind under all possible conditions and at all times. No surprise, then, that the Subaru Outback has raised the bar again with enhanced preventative safety systems designed to keep all occupants safe and sound.

Always on guard

The Subaru Outback is armed with a world-class all-wheel drive system, striking agility, standard Vehicle Dynamics Control with Active Torque Vectoring, ABS, improved visibility and next-generation thinking in the form of the EyeSight® advanced driver assist system. These advances give this SUV alternative superior levels of active safety and a strong reputation for accident avoidance from industry experts.

2016 Subaru Outback Superior Visibility

Superior Visibility

When advanced engineering and smart design meet in the middle, everything becomes clear. Better visibility has been achieved for this current generation of the Subaru Outback through a more raked windshield, a relocated A-pillar, redesigned front quarter windows, higher and more natural passenger seating, and door-mounted side mirrors to reduce blind spots.

2016 Subaru Outback EyeSight® Advanced Driver Assist System

EyeSight® Advanced Driver Assist System

The Outback is available with EyeSight, which utilizes two cameras to monitor activity on the road ahead, help identify potential danger and provide assistance to the driver when needed most. EyeSight features four different advanced active-safety systems: Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management and Vehicle Lane Departure and Sway Warning. With this feature, the Subaru Outback earned the highest possible front crash prevention rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS)**.

2016 Subaru Outback Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)

Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection System (SRVD)

Introducing the next step towards full-perimeter preventive safety. The available SRVD system offers three functions: Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Blind Spot Detection identifies vehicles behind the C-pillars and in other blind spots, while Lane Change Assist detects fast-approaching vehicles when changing lanes. Using a sensor in the back of the vehicle Rear Cross Traffic Alert signals drivers of close vehicles while reversing, such as out of a parking space or driveway.

2016 Subaru Outback Rearview Camera

Rearview Camera

Being able to see behind is not only a great convenience, it’s a great safety feature. With this system, a crystal-clear image of what’s behind your vehicle is projected onto the centre console screen. For an even more natural image free of distortion, the rear camera is located close to the centre of the vehicle and provides a wide view. This dynamite feature makes the Outback an even more confidence-inspiring ride.

2016 Subaru Outback Auto-dimming Side Mirror with

Auto-dimming Side Mirror with
Approach Lighting

When a vehicle approaches from behind or from an adjacent lane, these mirrors automatically dim to protect your eyes from headlight glare. In addition, an approach lighting feature sees a beam of light projected from the door mirrors to help you spot the door handles and avoid obstacles on the ground near the doors. This feature is standard on Touring and Limited models.

2016 Subaru Outback Steering Responsive Fog Lights

Steering Responsive Fog Lights

These fog lights automatically turn on one side to improve visibility when cornering at night, so you can better see in dark and murky conditions. This feature is available on select models upgraded with the Technology Package option. There’s no doubt about it: Better visibility leads directly to improved safety and these fog lights are a key safety feature.

VDC with Active Torque Vectoring

The Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system utilizes multiple sensors to assess when the limits of stability are near and then automatically adjusts the AWD torque distribution, engine output and brakes at each wheel to help keep the vehicle on-course. Active Torque Vectoring, also standard on all models, automatically applies brakes to the inside front wheel and distributes more torque to the outside wheels during cornering. Together, these systems give the Outback superior stability, cornering prowess and accident avoidance capabilities.

2016 Subaru Outback Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The ABS incorporates the latest advances, including Electronic Brake-force Distribution (automatically adjusts front/rear brake pressure under different vehicle loads), Brake Override (cuts engine power when the brakes are applied) and Brake Assist (provides added stopping power in panic-braking situations). To top it all off, there’s also the Hill Holder System, which helps prevent rollback on inclines.

Stands and delivers

In the event that an accident is unavoidable, every Subaru boasts a wide range of passive safety systems that are designed to deliver class-leading levels of protection. Each vehicle features exceptionally rigid construction and incorporates the latest technologies; together, these advances minimize collision damage and, in turn, generate much greater peace of mind.

2016 Subaru Outback Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame

Advanced Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frame

This advanced frame design incorporates more high-tensile steel, connects the roof to the side pillars and the floor, and uses cross-members to create one super-strong structure that dissipates and diverts crash energy away from the passenger cabin. A front crumple zone provides further protection in the event of a frontal impact.

Airbags

The Subaru Outback features a full complement of supplemental restraints which include dual-stage front airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, front seat cushion airbags and side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors for front and rear outboard occupants. This unwavering focus on passive safety represents an integral part of the Subaru brand promise.

2016 Subaru Outback Whiplash-reducing Front Seats

Whiplash-reducing Front Seats

The front seats are designed with rigid frames, firm headrests and energy-absorbing inner seat springs to help mitigate the effects of a rear-end collision and reduce the chances of whiplash. This is just another example of how Subaru goes the extra mile to give drivers an unsurpassed level of confidence behind the wheel.

Break-away Engine

Every Subaru goes above and beyond common practice when it comes to your safety. In the event of a head-on collision, the SUBARU BOXER engine and transmission are designed to absorb impact and then break away from the vehicle structure and drop below the passenger cabin for added protection.
