Oil Consumption

Based on Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) approved guidelines. Refer to NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide available at https://fcr-ccc.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/en for more information. Full battery charge and ideal conditions are required. Figures will vary based, amongst others and non-exclusively, on driving and charging habits, speed, accessory use, weather and temperature, battery age, vehicle condition, road condition and other factors. In sub ideal conditions, figures may worsen by more than 50%. Battery capacity decreases with time and use which will further reduce range. See the owner’s manual or NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide for details.

More Info on VIN

Vehicle Identification Numbers are unique codes given to each on-road vehicle. Each new car is given a standardized 17-digit code, which includes a serial number. Older cars may have VINs too, although they will not follow the standardized formula. A VIN lets you unlock vital information about the vehicle and its history.

Locating VINs

You can find a VIN on the car itself and on a variety of documents.

Finding it on the Car

The two most common places are the dashboard and driver's side door jamb sticker. Other places to find it are on the engine and inside the hood.

Finding it on Paperwork

The VIN is always on vehicle title documents. It's also on insurance policies, service records and police reports for the vehicle.

August 2017:

The Subaru philosophy and brand statement, "Confidence in Motion," speaks to who we are, what we believe and where we intend to go. With this philosophy in mind, we have implemented a Warranty Enhancement Program on certain 2011 to 2015 model year vehicles for a period of 8 years/160,000km's.

Vehicles covered under the Warranty Enhancement Program that have exceeded 160,000 km as of August 1, 2017, regardless of mileage will continue to receive the benefits of the Program for up to 12 months from the date of their notification letter.

Terms and Conditions of the Warranty Enhancement Program:

The Warranty Enhancement Program covers repairs to the Engine Block and Internal Parts, for repairs deemed necessary to correct excessive oil consumption due to manufacturing defects only.

The Warranty Enhancement Program carries forward the same terms and conditions listed in your Warranty/Maintenance and Roadside Assistance Booklet. The Program covers certain 2011 to 2015 model year vehicles sold to the first retail purchaser at an authorized Subaru Dealer in Canada. Every subsequent owner of an included vehicle will be entitled to the same benefits.

The Warranty Enhancement Program does not limit or restrict coverage for vehicles within the original 3 year/60,000 Complete Vehicle Warranty, 5 year/100,000 km Major Component Warranty, or vehicles currently covered by a Subaru Protection Plan.

Any repairs deemed necessary under the Warranty Enhancement Program will be determined based upon the results of a controlled oil consumption test conducted by an authorized Subaru Dealer, and an authorized Subaru Dealer must complete all repairs to be eligible for coverage.

WHICH VEHICLES RECEIVE THE BENEFITS OF THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM?

Certain 2011 to 2015 Forester's
Certain 2012 to 2015 Impreza's
Certain 2013 to 2015 Crosstrek's
Certain 2013 to 2014 Legacy and Outback

Note:
The year ranges listed above are a general guideline. There may be some exclusions dependent upon whether the vehicle is equipped with a CVT or Manual Transmission. All BRZ, 6 cylinder, and Turbo Charged vehicles are excluded from this warranty enhancement.

2. I OWN A COVERED VEHICLE, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?

I OWN A COVERED VEHICLE, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO

The implementation of a Warranty Enhancement Program does not mean that your vehicle requires repairs. If you believe you vehicle is operating normally, you can continue to enjoy your Subaru ownership experience.

If you believe that your vehicle consumes more engine oil than normal, please contact your authorized Subaru Dealer to arrange for a controlled oil consumption test.

3. WHOM DO I CONTACT TO HAVE A CONTROLLED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST PERFORMED?

If your vehicle is covered under the Warranty Enhancement Program, and you wish to have a controlled oil consumption test performed, you may contact your regular servicing Subaru Dealer or find your nearest authorized Subaru Dealer by following this link to setup an appointment.

4. ARE THERE ANY COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH PERFORMING A CONTROLLED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST?

Before beginning a controlled oil consumption test, your authorized Subaru Dealer will require the replacement of the Engine Oil and Filter. These costs will be covered by Subaru Canada.

The costs to perform this oil and filter change and the cost of actual controlled oil consumption test are covered up to a maximum of two times while the vehicle is covered under the Warranty Enhancement Program.

5. WHAT IS A CONTROLLED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST?

5. WHAT IS A CONTROLLED OIL CONSUMPTION TEST?

Your authorized Subaru Dealer will ask some questions pertaining to driving habits and previously completed regular maintenance, inspect for the proper operation of your low oil level indicator lamp (if your vehicle is fitted with one), and inspect for oil leaks or other possible concerns that may affect the outcome of the oil consumption test.

After verifying that a controlled oil consumption test can be performed successfully and completing the oil and filter change the next steps in the process are as follows:

  • If the vehicle has a yellow oil level indicator light and the light comes on before the next 10,000 km service, return the vehicle to the dealership where the dealership will perform a mileage check and an accurate oil consumption calculation. If the calculation shows oil consumption greater than 1 litre per 6,000 km, the engine will be repaired. If it is less, the vehicle is operating as designed and no further action is required.
  • If the vehicle has a yellow oil level indicator light and the light does not come on before the next 10,000 km service, the vehicle is operating as designed and no further action is required.
  • If the vehicle has no warning light, please return to the dealership after travelling 3,000 km and 6,000 km for the dealership to check the oil level and make accurate oil consumption calculations. If the calculations show oil consumption greater than 1 litre per 6,000 km the engine will be repaired. If it is less the vehicle is operating as designed and no further action is required.

Please remember that during a controlled oil consumption test the vehicle's operator is still responsible to ensure that fluid levels are checked on a regular basis.

If you are unable to bring your vehicle back to an authorized Subaru Dealer and oil is added, the controlled oil consumption test must be restarted and will count towards the maximum of two times mentioned above. The cost to perform an additional controlled oil consumption test beyond the two test allowance will be the responsibility of the vehicle owner.

6. WHAT IF I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE USED?

WHAT IF I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE USED?

The Warranty Enhancement Program applies to the vehicle and is transferred to subsequent owners. If you have recently moved, are the second owner, or did not receive notice of the Warranty Enhancement you may update your customer information by visiting your local Subaru Dealer or by visiting this page.

7. HOW CAN I CONFIRM IF MY VEHICLE IS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM?

HOW CAN I CONFIRM IF MY VEHICLE IS COVERED BY THE WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT PROGRAM

If you currently own a covered vehicle, and did not receive notification of the Warranty Enhancement Program, you may confirm coverage by contacting us at 1-855-327-2455.

8. WHAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION?

WHAT IS CONSIDERED TO BE NORMAL OIL CONSUMPTION?

It is quite normal for vehicles to consume oil during normal operation. With the use of synthetic oils and extending regular maintenance intervals to 10,000 kilometers, topping up engine oil between servicing may be necessary, leading owners to believe their vehicle is consuming more oil than normal.

Depending upon the model or year of production, your Owner's Manual, or Warranty/Maintenance and Roadside Assistance Booklet may list 1 litre/2,000 km's to 1 litre/5,000km's as rates of normal oil consumption.

Subaru Canada does not feel that these rates are representative of the improvements in quality and engineering of our vehicles and we have therefore raised the rate to 1 litre/6,000km's. This new rate takes precedence over all previously published rates of normal oil consumption.

9. I LIVE A CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE FROM A SUBARU DEALER, MAY I HAVE THE TEST PERFORMED AT AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP?

I LIVE A CONSIDERABLE DISTANCE FROM A SUBARU DEALER, MAY I HAVE THE TEST PERFORMED AT AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP?

Unfortunately, the controlled oil consumption test must be performed by an authorized Subaru Dealership.

10. MY VEHICLE REQUIRES REPAIRS; WILL I BE OFFERED A COURTESY VEHICLE WHILE THOSE REPAIRS ARE PERFORMED?

MY VEHICLE REQUIRES REPAIRS; WILL I BE OFFERED A COURTESY VEHICLE WHILE THOSE REPAIRS ARE PERFORMED?

Generally, Subaru Canada, Inc.'s warranty does not offer alternative transportation for repairs completed under Subaru Warranty. If you require alternative transportation, please discuss options with your regularly servicing Subaru Dealer.

For vehicles covered by a Subaru Protection Plan (SPP) coverage may be available for up to six days with limitations. Please refer to your SPP contract or your regular servicing Subaru Dealer for more information.

11. WHY DOES MY LOW OIL LEVEL WARNING LAMP OCCASIONALLY COME ON OR FLICKER?

WHY DOES MY LOW OIL LEVEL WARNING LAMP OCCASIONALLY COME ON OR FLICKER?

Your Low Oil Level Warning Lamp may illuminate if your engine oil level is low by approximately 1 litre, while the vehicle is stationary, and at other levels while in motion. Your Low Oil Level Warning Lamp may illuminate or flicker when the oil level fluctuates while driving under certain conditions, which may include:

  • When the vehicle is considerably inclined on an uphill or steep slope
  • When the vehicle has continuously accelerated and decelerated
  • When the vehicle is continuously turned
  • When the vehicle is driven on a road that alternates continuously between uphill and downhill

Please note that despite the possibility of false illuminations, the engine oil level should be checked every time the lamp illuminates. Please refer to section 3 of your applicable Owner’s Manual for more information.

12. HOW CAN I TELL IF MY VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN LOW OIL LEVEL WARNING LAMP?

HOW CAN I TELL IF MY VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN LOW OIL LEVEL WARNING LAMP?

All vehicles covered under this warranty enhancement are equipped with a low oil indicator lamp, except for 2011-2013 Model Year Foresters.

13. WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE FURTHER QUESTIONS?

Please contact your nearest Subaru Dealer for more information or to arrange an appointment for a controlled engine oil consumption test.
