Based on Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) approved guidelines. Refer to NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide available at https://fcr-ccc.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/en for more information. Full battery charge and ideal conditions are required. Figures will vary based, amongst others and non-exclusively, on driving and charging habits, speed, accessory use, weather and temperature, battery age, vehicle condition, road condition and other factors. In sub ideal conditions, figures may worsen by more than 50%. Battery capacity decreases with time and use which will further reduce range. See the owner’s manual or NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide for details.

Unsurpassed engineering,

all-road superiority

The 2026 Subaru Outback is the result of over half a century of Subaru engineering innovation—each generation refined, strengthened and tested for real-world confidence. Built on the Subaru Global Platform, the latest Outback combines greater structural rigidity, improved suspension tuning and a lower centre of gravity for smoother handling and exceptional comfort. Every component—from the SUBARU BOXER® engine to the Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system—is designed to deliver capability, balance and peace of mind on any surface, in any season.

Higher-Performing SUBARU BOXER® Engines

Two proven engines power the 2026 Outback, both designed for efficiency, durability and all-road response. The 2.5-litre Direct Injection SUBARU BOXER® engine balances energetic performance with outstanding fuel economy, thanks to reduced internal friction and optimized combustion. The available 2.4-litre Turbocharged Direct Injection SUBARU BOXER® engine produces 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque for effortless highway acceleration and confident towing. The unique horizontal design keeps the engine’s weight low for improved stability, while direct injection enhances both power delivery and efficiency. Each engine undergoes Subaru’s rigorous durability testing to ensure reliability through years of Canadian winters and summers.

Transmissions + Symmetrical Full-Time AWD

Every Outback pairs its SUBARU BOXER® engine with a refined Lineartronic® Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) for smooth, efficient power delivery. Three specialized versions are available: one tuned for the 2.5-litre engine, a high-torque CVT for turbocharged models, and a low-end drive-power optimized version for the Wilderness™. Each CVT has been refined for quieter operation, reduced vibration and faster response.

The Subaru Symmetrical Full-Time AWD system sends power to all four wheels continuously for superior traction, balance and cornering stability. The longitudinal layout ensures even weight distribution along the centreline of the vehicle, providing predictable control on snow, gravel and rain-soaked pavement alike. The result is SUV-grade confidence with the smoothness and efficiency of a car-based platform.

Three Versions of X-MODE®

X-MODE® enhances traction and control when the terrain gets rough. The standard system electronically manages engine output, transmission ratio and the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system to maintain grip on slippery surfaces. The dual-function X-MODE® system features selectable Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings for greater versatility. The Wilderness™ trim receives the enhanced dual-function X-MODE®, operated via a button on the steering wheel, which adjusts the damping characteristics of the adaptive electronic dampers, allowing for higher activation speeds and tailored traction logic for the toughest off-road conditions. Whether tackling steep hills or unpaved tracks, X-MODE® ensures the Outback keeps its composure where others falter.

Hill Descent Control

When X-MODE® is activated, Hill Descent Control automatically manages speed during steep downhill sections. This technology maintains a steady pace by modulating the brakes and powertrain, freeing the driver to focus on steering. The system provides additional confidence on slippery or uneven surfaces, particularly when descending trails or icy roads, ensuring a controlled, stable ride from start to finish.

Engineered for strength, versatility and refinement

The Outback’s chassis is the foundation of its capability and comfort. Built on the Subaru Global Platform, it employs extensive high-tensile steel reinforcement for exceptional rigidity, crash protection and vibration reduction. This strength allows engineers to fine-tune the suspension for smoother response, less body roll and better stability. The result is a ride that’s both composed and comfortable, equally suited to urban commutes or remote highways. On the Outback Wilderness™, a specially tuned suspension maintains agility and control despite the increased ground clearance.

Front Suspension

The MacPherson® strut-type front suspension with coil springs and stabilizer bars is designed for precise feedback and dependable control. The setup includes a k-shaped cross-member brace—an element usually reserved for high-performance vehicles—that minimizes lateral flex and vibration while enhancing steering stability. Combined with optimized geometry and improved bushing design, it allows the Outback to corner flatter and absorb bumps more smoothly. The system also contributes to quieter operation by isolating road harshness before it reaches the cabin.

Rear Suspension

At the rear, the Outback uses a double-wishbone suspension engineered to reduce noise and maintain stability over uneven terrain. The body mounted stabilizer bar helps with reducing body roll during turns. The design allows each wheel to move independently, improving comfort and grip while maintaining excellent cargo and passenger space. The overall result is an SUV that feels planted and predictable no matter what lies ahead—hallmarks of Subaru engineering at its best.
