(MISSISSAUGA) — Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) is pleased to announce that its parent company Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. will change its company name to Subaru Corporation (SBR), effective April 1, 2017.
The origins of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI) date back to the founding of the Aircraft Research Laboratory (later renamed as Nakajima Aircraft Co., Ltd.) in 1917. After several reorganizations, FHI was established under its current name in 1953 with a focus on aerospace and industrial products. In 1958, FHI entered the automotive field with the introduction of the Subaru 360 minicar.
By using the 100th anniversary of the 1917 founding of Nakajima Aircraft as a springboard to unify its corporate name and brand name, Subaru Corporation will accelerate its efforts to achieve greater growth and enhance Subaru as a global brand in the automotive and aerospace industries. To mark the change, renaming ceremonies will be held at the head office in Ebisu, Tokyo, as well as three other domestic facilities. Examples of Subaru Corporation products will be on display at the head office, including the all-new 2017 Impreza, built on the all-new Subaru Global Platform, and a large-scale model of the 412EPI helicopter.
By offering the distinctive value of “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” for which Subaru is known, customers worldwide will recognize Subaru Corporation as a compelling company with a strong market presence, built upon the principle of putting the customer first.

“Subaru” is the Japanese name of the Pleiades star cluster. Subaru was the first brand to use a Japanese name for its vehicles and the name symbolizes the unity of the six companies related to Nakajima Aircraft that merged to form Fuji Heavy Industries.
