Based on Natural Resources Canada’s (NRCan) approved guidelines. Refer to NRCan’s Fuel Consumption Guide available at https://fcr-ccc.nrcan-rncan.gc.ca/en for more information. Full battery charge and ideal conditions are required. Figures will vary with driving and charging habits, speed, accessory use, weather and temperature, battery age, vehicle condition and road condition. In non-ideal conditions, figures may worsen by more than 50%. Battery capacity decreases with time and use which will further reduce range. See owner’s manual for details.

Safety + technology =
confidence at all four corners

Safety + technology = confidence at all four corners

For more than 60 years, Subaru has led with engineering that protects people first. The 2026 Outback continues this legacy with advanced technologies designed to help drivers avoid danger, respond faster, and stay safer on every journey. Built on the Subaru Global Platform for exceptional crash-energy absorption, the Outback integrates active and passive systems that work together to create confidence in all conditions.

Award-winning safety technology

The Subaru Outback is built around active safety. It starts with the fundamentals—Symmetrical Full-Time AWD, balanced weight distribution and excellent visibility—and adds layers of intelligent protection through the latest EyeSight®◊ Driver Assist Technology, Automatic Emergency Steering and DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation. Systems like X-MODE®, Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection and Vehicle Dynamics Control with Active Torque Vectoring constantly work behind the scenes to help the driver avoid danger and stay in control, whether navigating a tight downtown intersection or an icy mountain pass.

EyeSight Disclaimer Brief

EyeSight® is a driver assist system, which may not operate optimally under all driving conditions. The driver is always responsible for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors such as vehicle maintenance, and weather and road conditions. See Owner's Manual for complete details on system operation and limitations. Please remember to turn off EyeSight when going through a car wash.

Clear Sightlines

Good visibility is the first step in active safety. The Outback’s elevated seating position, large windows and steeply raked windshield create an expansive outward view. Slim A-pillars and door-mounted side mirrors reduce blind spots, while generous ground clearance improves the driver’s vantage point in traffic and on trails alike. Even before advanced cameras come into play, the Outback helps the driver see—and anticipate—more.

2026 Subaru Outback EyeSight Driver-Assist Technology

EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology

Standard on every Outback, the latest generation of EyeSight®Opens link in new window. uses cameras with a wider field of vision and new processing capability to identify potential hazards sooner and react faster. The wide-angle mono camera expands the system’s coverage at intersections and side approaches. EyeSight® now includes Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Adaptive Cruise Control with Vehicle Hold, Lane Centring Assist, Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning, Emergency Lane Keep Assist, Emergency Stop Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. Also included are Acceleration Override Assist and Automatic Emergency Steering, which helps avoid collisions by combining steering input and braking when obstacles appear suddenly. The system now provides haptic vibration feedback through the steering wheel to warn the driver when the vehicle is about to depart from its lane. Front Pre-Collision Braking (front radar) is a feature only available to the Premier XT. Together, these systems support the driver with quiet precision, enhancing confidence without reducing control.

DriverFocus® Driver Monitoring System (DMS)

Available on all trim levels, the DriverFocus® system acts like an attentive co-pilot. Using a camera angled toward the driver and facial-recognition technology, it monitors for signs of fatigue or distraction. If the driver’s focus drifts, visual and audible alerts prompt quick correction. It’s another example of how Subaru combines intuitive technology with real human understanding.

Diagram of how High-Beam Assist works.

High Beam Assist

Standard across the lineup, LED Steering Responsive Headlight (SRH) with High Beam Assist automatically adjusts low- and high-beams according to traffic conditions ahead. The system detects oncoming vehicles or those ahead and automatically dims the headlights. Once the road is clear, it restores full illumination. This intelligent lighting ensures optimal visibility at night without the need for constant adjustment.

Image of how Reverse Auto Braking works.

Reverse Automatic Braking

Also standard across the board, Reverse Automatic Braking helps prevent low-speed collisions while backing up. Ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper detect obstacles that may be out of sight. When a collision risk is detected, the system alerts the driver with audible warnings and automatically applies the brakes if necessary. The vehicle’s proximity to the object is also displayed on the infotainment screen, giving the driver both visual and audible cues to act.

Subaru Rear/Side Vehicle Detection (SRVD)

SRVD combines three systems—Blind Spot Detection, Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert—to extend the driver’s awareness. Blind Spot Detection alerts when vehicles enter blind zones, while Lane Change Assist warns of fast-approaching traffic from adjacent lanes. Rear Cross Traffic Alert helps when reversing from driveways or parking spots by detecting vehicles approaching from either side. Bright LED indicators built into the side mirrors provide immediate, intuitive warnings, helping prevent surprises in busy traffic.

Image of Outback showing how the Rearview camera works.

Rearview Camera

Every Outback comes equipped with a high-resolution rearview camera positioned near the vehicle’s centreline for a clear, distortion-free image. The display includes dynamic guide lines that move with the steering wheel, showing the exact path of the vehicle. A built-in washer keeps the camera lens clean in mud, slush or road salt, ensuring clear visibility in all seasons.

Close up of the LED Steering Responsive Headlights (SRH).

Steering Responsive Headlights

Standard LED headlights on all trims pivot toward the direction of travel when cornering. This system improves night-time visibility by projecting light where the driver is steering, revealing pedestrians, obstacles and curves earlier. Bright, white LED illumination enhances overall visibility, making night drives more comfortable and secure.

Diagram of how Vehicle Dynamics Control and Active Torque Vectoring works.

Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) with Active Torque Vectoring

VDC continuously monitors steering, throttle and braking inputs to assess the vehicle’s stability. When it detects a potential loss of traction, it adjusts engine output, brake pressure and torque distribution to help maintain the intended path. Active Torque Vectoring complements the system by lightly braking the inside front wheel and directing more power to the outside wheel during turns. Together, these technologies create more precise cornering and improved control on wet, icy or uneven roads.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The 4-channel, 4-sensor ABS features the latest refinements for confident braking in all conditions. Electronic Brake-force Distribution automatically balances pressure between front and rear wheels according to load, while Brake Assist adds extra power in emergency stops. The Brake Override function prioritizes braking input if both pedals are pressed simultaneously. Auto Vehicle Hold (AVH) prevents rollback by keeping the vehicle stationary at full stops, even on inclines. Each feature works in harmony to ensure stability and shorter stopping distances when it matters most.

Rock-solid to the core

Passive safety in the 2026 Outback begins with strength you can feel. The Subaru Global Platform creates a reinforced safety shell that channels impact energy away from occupants. This strong, stable base supports advanced restraint systems and energy-absorbing materials throughout the cabin. The result: a vehicle that’s as protective as it is capable.

Advanced Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame

Subaru’s signature frame design connects the roof, side pillars and floor into a unified cage. High-tensile steel and reinforced joints absorb and dissipate impact forces more effectively than conventional structures. This frame design significantly improves both side- and front-impact performance while maintaining the Outback’s low weight and excellent handling balance.

Airbags

The 2026 Outback includes a comprehensive array of supplemental restraints. The driver is protected by a dual-stage deployment airbag with seat position sensor, a side-impact airbag and another airbag to guard the knees. The front passenger is covered by a dual-stage deployment airbag with occupant detection system, side-impact airbag and seat cushion airbag. Side curtains provide protection to all occupants from both sides. Each component is precisely calibrated to deploy at the right speed and pressure, reducing injury risk in a wide range of collisions.

Injury-Reducing Seats and Seatbelt Systems

Every seat and belt in the Outback has been engineered with real-world protection in mind. Front seats use robust frames, energy-absorbing mounts and active headrests to minimize whiplash. Height-adjustable, three-point adaptive seatbelts with double pretensioners and locking tongues hold passengers securely in place, while load limiters moderate chest pressure in severe impacts. Rear Seatbelt Reminders trigger a light and a warning chime to ensure every passenger is safely fastened, and ISO-FIX/LATCH anchors simplify installation of compatible child safety seats through easily accessible lower anchor bars.

Break-away Engine

In a severe frontal impact, the SUBARU BOXER® engine and Lineartronic® CVT are designed to absorb impact energy and then drop below the vehicle’s floor structure. This unique design helps prevent the engine and transmission from intruding into the cabin space, protecting occupants from secondary impacts and reducing the risk of injury. It’s another quiet example of Subaru’s thoughtful, engineering-led approach to safety.
